Frost Protection 4.0

Predictive maintenance on the railways

Embever is working with Deutsche Bahn to keep locomotives with smart sensors always ready for operation in winter.

Class 101 locomotives pull IC trains across the country. To ensure that the vehicles are always ready for operation even at low temperatures, they remain under power in their standby mode at night during the winter months. Voltage changes can cause the connection to the power line to be interrupted, the starter battery to discharge and the locomotive not being put into service on time.

This is where Embever's smart IoT technology can help. Wireless, battery-operated sensors continuously check the voltage of the starter battery and inform the responsible control center directly in case of any malfunction. The vehicles can be deployed immediately, which improves punctuality and reduces the time-consuming manual checks called "frost guard".
