Predictive Maintenance on the railways

After participating in the DB mindbox 2019 startup cooperation program, Embever is working together with Deutsche Bahn to keep locomotives of class 101 with smart sensors ready for operation in winter.

Summary

Challenge

Under low temperatures, locomotives can disarm itself by automatically taking the pantograph off the grid. If the starter battery is subsequently discharged, it can't be started for its next operation, causing delays in train traffic.

Solution

A system of wireless and battery-operated sensors continuously check the voltage of the starter battery and inform the responsible control centre directly in case of critical status.
